Shrewsbury Town boss Paul Hurst hails players after Sunderland link

Paul Hurst believes being linked with the vacant Sunderland manager’s job is down to the superb efforts of his Shrewsbury Town players.

Reports suggested that Hurst was open to the idea of moving up north to take the reins at the Championship side.

He has since vowed he has ‘got a job to do here’, as Salop sit at the top of League One after just one loss from 16 games.

“Bury lost their manager this week and Sunderland have, that’s the other side which is not nice,” said Hurst.

“I don’t take any pleasure in seeing anyone lose their job, that is for sure.

“There’s been, to my knowledge, loads of names linked with both jobs. If mine is the latest, you can’t do much about it.

“It’s hopefully just a sign that the work you do with the football club is being recognised, the efforts of the players.”

He added: “I know there is a lot of people watching the players I have currently got.

“Whether that, eventually, turns into anything concrete for any of them we’ll see, that’s just part and parcel of doing well – and us doing well when we weren’t expected to be near the position that we currently occupy.”

Hurst feels he has been ‘fortunate’ in his career as a manager so far.

Having won promotion from the National League at Grimsby Town in the 2015/16 campaign, he managed to keep Town up last season before overseeing a 15-match unbeaten run this term – which ended with a 1-0 loss at Peterborough United last weekend.

“Things have been going very well here, you feel like you are building something,” added Hurst.

“You want to win things in your career and I’ve been fortunate in my career as a manager that every season, bar one, I’ve really had something to fight for – usually at the top end.

“Last year was a different challenge we managed to achieve. “It’ll be a massive challenge for us to stay anywhere near where we are (in the table).”
