A fourth consecutive victory on the road, this time a deserved 2-0 win at Charlton, sees Town keep the pressure on their promotion rivals and stay second in League One.

Shrewsbury were roared on by 1,254 away fans at The Valley on Saturday and Hurst was chuffed to see the fans getting behind the side and responding to the performance they witnessed.

The boss insists that his players play with pride for the Shrewsbury shirt and that their commitment cannot be questioned.

"This season, realistically, is the best season the football club has had for a long, long time," the boss said. "Certainly in League One.

"Enjoy it, get on board with it because we've got some very good players at the club and a great squad work ethic that are honest.

"Maybe it does frustrate you from time to time if you hear any negatives because I think these lads try.

"Some of the performances aren't as good, accepted, but they try. Nearly every manager or staff I speak to says 'what an honest group you've got.'

"When you set out at the start of the season. Fans want a team that will wear the shirt with pride and that group certainly does that."

Alex Rodman and Omar Beckles sealed the points with second-half goals. Hurst was impressed with how confident his side looked against an in-form, play-off chasing Charlton outfit.

He said: "We can't be naive to think it's always going to be like that. But it hasn't happened often when we've been under-par.

"The lads shook it off. The other day I said they were low on confidence but that wasn't there, they looked a very confident team that wanted to get on the ball."
