Alex Rodman scored Town's first and created the second in the Walsall win

The flying winger struck after just six minutes and created Abu Ogogo's win two minutes from time to secure a win for Paul Hurst's side – just their second league success against Walsall since 1993.

And Rodman dedicated his star display to his ill Grandpa and was delighted to answer the calls of his mother, who asked him to score a goal for his Grandpa.

"I'm very happy with it," said the winger, who netted his eighth goal of the season. "I'd like to dedicate that one to my Grampa. It's been a tough time for me and the family recently with my gramps.

"I'd like to put that one to him."

Rodman, who explained that his Grandpa is a fond follower of the winger's career, was pleased to honour his grandfather with the goal and assist and added it would be a big boost to his family.

"He came down to the Bristol (Rovers) game," added Shrewsbury's No.23. "The day after the Bristol game was a tough time for us.

"I had a chat with my mum. He's down in Wales and she's down with him and my mum asked me to put on a performance and score for him so it was nice to be able to do that.

"He's not in great shape but he'll be smiling inside from that today. Hopefully I get the chance to speak to him later on. It was nice to be able to do that for him."

Rodman, who is now also in double-figures for assists in Shrewsbury's high-flying League One campaign, was glad to see the hosts come out on top in a derby day environment. "I did enjoy that. It's always nice on derby day and lovely to send the fans home happy," Rodman continued.

"Derby games are always feisty and tense and I thought we showed our grit, resilience and dug in. It wasn't a pretty game but we've come out the other side. It's all about points on the board.

"We're coming to the end of the season. Crunch time. It doesn't matter about the performance it's just about points on the board and it's always special to do that in a derby game."
