Injuries to the other goalkeepers in Aidy Boothroyd's Young Lions squad mean that the popular Town shot-stopper is the only fit goalkeeper available heading into the friendly against Romania.

It is the third time the on-loan Manchester United man has been called up to the squad this season, but he is yet to win a cap for the age group.

Angus Gunn, on loan at Norwich from Manchester City, has featured for Boothroyd's side, where Newcastle's Freddie Woodman, on loan at Aberdeen, is also battling for the No.1 shirt. Both are nursing injuries heading into the weekend.

Town boss Paul Hurst has been pleased for Henderson to receive recognition from the Three Lions, but stated that he is keen for Henderson to taste match minutes while called up.

"We have a back and hip little issue with Angus and Freddie," said former Watford boss Boothroyd. "Because they're both goalkeepers we've taken them out of the firing line, as a precaution. I'm hoping both will be fine."

The under-21s then welcome Ukraine to Sheffield United's Bramall Lane for a Euro 2019 qualifier on Tuesday.

Henderson won six under-20 caps and was part of the squad that won the Under-20s World Cup last summer.
