Play-off places up for grabs – Shrewsbury Town assistant Chris Doig
Chris Doig has urged all the Shrewsbury Town players to ‘be better at everything’ in an effort to be in the team for the play-offs.
Town drew 1-1 at Blackpool last weekend and assistant boss Doig felt the performance was lacking in a lot of areas.
They end the regular League One season against already-relegated MK Dons at home on Saturday, and Paul Hurst’s right-hand man said: “I’m looking for a few things.
"I’d certainly like to see a bit more action in the opposition end and more chances created – pretty much everything. Be better at everything.
“I’d like to see everything ramped up a little bit with the first play-off leg in mind.
“The team is not picked yet (for the play-offs). So as long as the team is not picked there’s always a chance to play. When you get an opportunity, in training as well as games, you should be making an impression on the gaffer.
“I know I would, I’d be desperate to play and doing everything I could to make sure I played – that’s what the lads should do.”
While aware the players are desperate not to pick up injuries ahead of the play-offs, Doig felt some took their foot off the gas a little too much at Bloomfield Road.
“I wouldn’t describe the lads as chomping at the bit from the performances there, I thought it was the opposite at times,” said Doig.
“I’m sure they know, realistically, they all want to be fit and play in the play-offs. It’s human nature to have an eye on that and that in mind.
“What they have is one more game, where those that play have got to make a statement and tell the gaffer they want to be part of the team. When I say I want performances ramped up it’s with that in mind. Make a statement and say you want to be part of the team in the play-offs.”
Doig has gone all the way in the play-offs, albeit at a lower level, before.
He played as York City won 2-1 against Luton Town in the Conference Premier play-off final at Wembley in 2012.
