The victory sparked scenes of wild celebration for Town fans, who had roared on their heroes throughout the game at the Montgomery Waters Meadow.

And after a tense and goalless first half, Carlton Morris gave Shrewsbury the lead on the day and a 2-0 advantage in the tie, after their 1-0 victory at The Valley on Thursday.

It means Shrewsbury will play either Scunthorpe or Rotherham at Wembley for a place in the Championship on May 27 and caps a stunning season for Paul Hurst’s side.

Tonight's game had been labelled as one of the biggest in Shrewsbury’s history – but the players handled the pressure superbly, cheered on by a crowd of more than 9,000.

Morris’s left-footed strike was the difference between the two sides as he followed up Jon Nolan’s first-leg stunner to book a second Wembley trip of the season.

The final whistle saw thousands of fans race on to the pitch to join the scenes of celebration.
