Wembley play-off final: Painting the town blue and amber for the Shrews

Members of the club’s supporters’ parliament have been working hard to create a buzz in the town and give one last push for ticket sales.

More than 10,000 tickets have been sold for Sunday’s game against Rotherham but there are still seats available for Salop supporters.

In a bid to fill as many of Shrewsbury Town’s 20,000 allocated seats as possible, Roger Groves and Mike Davis from the supporters’ parliament headed into town with club banners.

Mike said: “The football club put up banners for the last trip to Wembley for the Checkatrade Trophy so we took them out into the town and asked businesses to display them and support us.

“Everyone we went to was really helpful and is really behind the football club.”

A total of 15 businesses are now proudly bearing blue and amber banners, including Tesco, The Salopian Bar and Salop Computer Centre.

“This is potentially the biggest game in the club’s history so we want the town to get behind the team and be proud of what they have achieved this season,” Mike added.

“But it’s not just businesses we want to get involved. We want to encourage everyone to get the Town flags and banners out and decorate their houses. The aim is to turn the town blue and amber.”

Roger, who is joint chairman of the parliament, is urging the public to get behind their local team - even if they’re not regulars at Montgomery Waters Meadow.

He said: “A lot of people have said lets turn Wembley into a blue and amber shrine, which is great, but I think we should also do it in our home town. Seeing the banners and colours gives a real feel-good factor.

“Most of the die-hard fans will have already got their tickets now but I hope the banners will encourage the last people to get theirs even if they just go to one game a year - make it this one.”

The director of Morgans The Exchange Hotel, Quinn Morgan, said hanging banners and flags around the town is a great way to show support.

He added: “We’re more than happy to put a banner up and support the club - and I hope everyone else does too.” Shrewsbury getting to Wembley is very positive for the town and now let’s just hope they win that last game against Rotherham.

“If they win and get into the Championship, the teams that will be coming here are huge. We’ll have the likes of Sheffield Wednesday, West Brom and Leeds - massive, massive clubs. The money it will bring into the town is huge.

“I’m just really hoping they can get over the line now but it’s going to be hard.”
