Paul Hurst on 'emotional' and 'farcical' play-off defeat for Shrewsbury Town
Paul Hurst insists Shrewsbury Town's League One play-off final defeat to Rotherham was 'emotional' and at times 'farcical'.
Salop lost 2-1 after extra time in the Wembley heat, denying them promotion to the second tier.
The club has lost all of its five visits to the home of English football.
"In the second half, I thought we were more like ourselves. We had a go," said Hurst.
"It's an emotional day, you get caught up in the game.
"What I will say is that Dean Henderson had to make more saves than their keeper.
"I did feel like we had a good spell once we equalised but the game becomes a bit of a farce almost, with the heat and people cramping up – and not just because we've lost. It was for both teams.
"You play 48 games, your cup games as well, and it ends up with that. Maybe using more subs?
"It wasn't a particularly good end to the game, when you've got so many people cramping up but maybe it adds to the drama for the neutral watching.
"There was people cramping up all over the place, you can't really play the way you would like."
Hurst is the hot favourite for the vacant Ipswich job.
He added: "Overall, congratulations to Paul Warne and everyone at Rotherham – returning to the Championship at the first attempt.
"If someone had to beat us, (it would be them). I am genuinely pleased for those lads. He'll enjoy it, I'm sure.
"It's never nice to concede any goal, but certainly set plays. We gave them too many opportunities to test us out on that side.
"The first goal, we can clear for a throw instead of a corner.
"That's something else you look at – the three teams that came down are the ones who get promoted.
"It suggests that it is very difficult, they have a big advantage when the season begins."
