Choose Shrewsbury Town to progress says Ben Godfrey
Midfield star Ben Godfrey has told any young player looking to progress with a loan spell to choose Shrewsbury Town.
The 20-year-old spent a magnificent season with League One high-flyers Town, playing at Wembley twice during his 51 appearances with Salop this season.
He has returned to parent club Norwich City where he hopes to make an impact in Daniel Farke’s first team next season.
But Godfrey, one of ex-boss Paul Hurst’s final recruits of last summer, was an instant hit in blue and amber with his powerful and energetic displays in defensive midfield.
And tough-tackling Godfrey insists Montgomery Waters Meadow is the place to be for all developing young players.
“I can’t praise the club enough. Any young players out there that want to go on loan, you have to come to this club because it brings you on leaps and bounds,” he said.
“The support has meant an awful lot. It’s been a massive part of my career. I’ll never forget it.
“I’ve learned things here that are hopefully going to take me to that next level.”
Godfrey made just two league substitute appearances for his Carrow Road parent club before joining Town.
But he grew an immediate affinity with the Town fans, who regularly chanted his name throughout a memorable 62-game season.
“I can’t thank them enough,” Godfrey said of the Shrewsbury faithful.
“They’ve been the 12th man and pulled me through some ups and downs which happen through a season. They’ve been absolutely unbelievable. I’ve got so much love and respect for them.”
Godfrey’s final outing in blue and amber was last Sunday’s ‘cruel’ League One play-off final defeat to Rotherham at Wembley.
He added: “I’m absolutely gutted. For the boys especially, but the whole club and the fans.
“There’s been so much effort put into this year. That’s football, it’s a cruel industry and sometimes you don’t get the result you want.
“I just want to say a massive thank you to every single person involved.
“Staff, players, fans, they’ve brought me on leaps and bounds on and off the field. I feel like I’ve changed and matured as a person.
“I’ve enjoyed every single second of my time here and there’ll always be a place for Shrewsbury Town in my heart.”
