Shrewsbury Town still hunting for goalkeeper
Assistant boss John Filan said Shrewsbury are working hard to sign a goalkeeper after it was revealed Reice Charles-Cook is the mystery shot-stopper on trial.
Town, who saw Dean Henderson and Craig MacGilivray leave the club at the end of last season, have added former Forest Green Rovers glovesman Steve Arnold to their ranks this summer.
But they are currently on the hunt for competition for the 28-year-old.
Former Coventry and Swindon goalkeeper Charles-Cook featured in the friendly against Brentford on Saturday and in a 2-1 victory over Telford United last night.
And Filan – who himself enjoyed a glittering playing career between the posts – said he and boss John Askey are working hard to bring in a keeper.
“We are always looking for good players and as everyone knows the window has been quite slow in some regards,” he said.
“We are on it. We are working hard in the background and hopefully we will get that boxed off as soon as possible.
“Reice has done well. He has been training with us, he has been good in the group which his great.
“Our group is full of good characters and he is another that has come in and shown what he can do. We will see what happens.”
Alongside Charles Cook, Shrewsbury handed a trial to Spanish midfielder Gerado in last night’s friendly at the New Bucks Head.
“He (Gerado) has come in looking to train,” Filan continied.
“He is a Spanish boy so he looks to play football. He is a good addition to the training group and has shown what he can do.
“He is good on the ball and wants to play football which is the thing we want from people. We’ll see what the future holds.
“The manager has been asked by someone to have a look at him so that is what we have been doing.”
Goals from Arthur Gnahoua and Fejiri Okenabirhie saw Town come from behind to beat Telford 2-1.
“I think it was a really useful exercise for us,” Filan added.
“Obviously it’s great to win games. You go into every game wanting to win it. But there were some aspects from it that were very pleasing.
“We kept the ball down, worked hard with and without the ball – all the things we want to do.”
