The 25-year-old striker, signed from Oldham Athletic earlier this summer, proved a great threat with his pace and power and netted in each half at Vale Park.

Shaun Whalley and substitute Lenell John-Lewis also struck for John Askey's side, who get their League One campaign under way at home against Bradford City next weekend.

Connell Rawlinson and Tom Pope got the goals for Neil Aspin's outfit.

Joel Coleman was making his first appearance between the sticks for Salop after his season-long loan move from Premier League outfit Huddersfield Town and in a three-man midfield was Doug Loft, who used to be Vale skipper. Former Town forward Louis Dodds was in from the off for the hosts.

Vale began very sharply, forcing Coleman into a couple of decent saves. He had to deny a low Ricky Miller free-kick before stopping a Dodds drive with his feet.

Miller was the one making the home side tick. He had another effort before the 10-minute mark, weaving his way through the Salop midfield before launching the ball high and wide. Pope then shot straight at Coleman.

It was a sluggish start to the game from Town - struggling to put a series of passes together. Disjointed and slow.

Things improved as the half progressed though and a fine sequence almost gave them the lead. Whalley's cross was chested down by Amadi-Holloway to Josh Laurent, whose sweet volley stung the palms of Scott Brown.

Then came three goals within six minutes. Vale broke the deadlock as former New Saints man Rawlinson rose highest to head home Luke Hannant's corner.

But Aspin's men got complacent after that, and Salop took advantage. Whalley beat the offside trap to latch onto Jon Nolan's through-ball and slot home, to level.

Amadi-Holloway was then afforded way too much time in the box, taking a touch to set himself - following Stefan Payne's layoff - before firing in with his left foot for the lead.

Town did not make a change for the beginning of the second period. Vale made two though - Scott Quigley, who also used to play for The New Saints, entering the fray alongside Dave Worrall.

And Quigley almost had an immediate impact, poking over the crossbar from a tight angle and letting off Coleman who could have moved off his line quicker.

Straight up the other end, Amadi-Holloway grabbed his second of the afternoon with a cool finish from close range - Omar Beckles with the assist.

There was still life in Vale though. They almost pulled one back prior to the hour mark as Cristian Montano burst through and dragged the ball wide of the far post with his left foot. He felt a deflection took the ball off target but referee Mark Heywood pointed for a goal kick.

The home crowd were frustrated by some sloppy play from their side, but a lackadaisical moment from James Bolton resulted in them pulling one back.

The right-back tried to shield the ball out of play but Dodds nicked it off him and squared it to Pope to tap in from a few yards out.

Askey decided to make five substitutions following that goal - and then three more several moments later.

With the changes, unsurprisingly, Salop lost their lustre for a brief period. John-Lewis, one of the many introduced late on, restored the shine though with an emphatic half-volley from the edge of the box which left Brown helpless.

Vale almost added to the goal tally as Worrall shaved the side netting. Ultimately there was plenty of positives going forward for Town, with some bits and pieces to work on at the back.

In the end, they made 10 substitutions. The only one to last the full 90 minutes was Toto Nsiala.
