Shaun Whalley out to defy the odds once more with Shrewsbury Town
Shrewsbury Town winger Shaun Whalley is glad to have got pre-season out of the way and hopes to upset the League One odds again.
Whalley was a key part of Salop’s success last term – finishing third before defeat in theLeague One play-off final – and insists the mood in the camp is very high under new boss John Askey.
Looking ahead to the 2018/19 campaign, Whalley said: “At the start of last season, nobody expected us to be up there.
“And I don’t think anybody outside of Shrewsbury is expecting us to do anything this year.
“Hopefully we can start the season well, go on a decent run like last year, and see where that takes us.”
Whalley was a favourite of Paul Hurst, who upped sticks for Ipswich earlier this summer, and has clicked with new chief Askey.
“It’s just all been new. It was a bit mad at first, a bit weird, but you soon get used to it,” he said.
“So far, I’m getting on really well with this manager.
“He seems like a very good fella, first of all. And he know what he’s doing.
“He did very well at Macclesfield and hopefully it’ll be the same with us.”
And on getting a goal in Saturday’s 4-2 win at Port Vale, Whalley added: “Jon (Nolan) has put a brilliant ball through and I’ve tucked it away.
“And then after that I thought we dominated.
“They were all good goals. It was a nice game of football.”
