Shrewsbury Town boss John Askey hails Aaron Amadi-Holloway's 'perfect' start
Shrewsbury Town boss John Askey hopes Aaron Amadi-Holloway’s double at the weekend is a sign of things to come from the striker.
The 25-year-old was the standout performer in a 4-2 win at Port Vale on Saturday, their final pre-season fixture.
He was signed from Oldham Athletic to fill the void left by Carlton Morris’s return to Norwich City, and Askey believes things have worked out ‘perfect’ so far.
“Not only has he scored two, but his all-round play was really good,” said the Town chief.
“With somebody like Aaron, it helps us get up the pitch. He holds the ball up well, he’s really strong. Hopefully he can keep that going now.
“You can all see that he’s played really well in the games that he’s played in.
“He’s a good footballer, wins his headers.
“At the moment he’s like the perfect striker, getting the goals. It’s looking good.”
Also on the scoresheet for Salop at Vale Park were Shaun Whalley and Lenell John-Lewis.
Askey was particularly pleased that John-Lewis, who missed a penalty and hit the crossbar in the previous friendly at AFC Telford United, came off the bench and got a goal.
“If you get a goal it gives you confidence and we know what we’re going to get from Lenny,” he said. “He gives everything he has got so for him to get a goal, that’ll help him.”
Town’s 10th summer signing, Joel Coleman, on loan from Huddersfield, made his debut in goal. He featured for an hour, being replaced by Steve Arnold – also snapped up in this window.
On how the shot-stopper on loan from Huddersfield Town for the season fared,Askey said: “We’ve been waiting to bring Joel in and it’s good to have two good goalkeepers. I thought he looked pretty sound. , didn’t have loads to do.
“Most of what he had to do, he did well.”
And on if that’s their summer business completed, Askey said with a smile: “I’ve speaking to the chairman and he said I can sign another 10.
“I don’t think there’ll be any more for a bit.
“You’re always looking to improve but I’ve been fortunate, getting the players in that we have.”
Meanwhile, goalkeeper Ben Wilson – who was on trial with Salop earlier this summer – has signed for League One rivals Bradford City. He could be in goal as Town kick off the campaign against the Bantams on Saturday.
