League is No.1 priority for Shrewsbury Town says John Askey
John Askey would prioritise Shrewsbury’s league campaign over a cup run, he told fans at a public meeting.
The Town boss fielded questions from supporters at Montgomery Waters Meadow as part of an initiative to build links with the fan base and new management team.
Askey was asked if he would put the league or cup first, to which he replied: “The league is the most important thing.
“To get Shrewsbury into the Championship would be unbelievable. But it is important to win as well and to go to Wembley and win would be great.”
There was good-hearted groans from the crowd at the mention of Wembley given Town’s history of having lost each of the five times they have been there.
However, there was an optimistic atmosphere inside the room as the club and fans look ahead to the new season, on the back of last year’s memorable campaign where they were almost promoted to the Championship.
Askey said: “Hopefully we can compete first and foremost, get a good start and then, with a bit of confidence, who knows where we could go?”
The manager was also pressed on whether there will be anymore signings and he said: “I don’t think you can ever be satisfied, you are always trying to improve.”
