Shrewsbury Town wait on cash windfall in Ryan Woods deal
Shrewsbury Town are hoping for a cash windfall from Ryan Woods’s reported move from Brentford to fellow Championship side Swansea.
Former Town favourite Woods, 24, was expected to finalise an £8m move to The Liberty Stadium, which would entitle Town to a cash windfall due to his 20 per cent sell-on fee. That would leave as much as £1.4m being available for Town for the midfielder who came through the Shrewsbury academy before making his first-team debut in 2012.
Woods was left out of Dean Smith’s Brentford team that hammered Rotherham 5-1 on the opening day of the season.
Smith revealed the speculation linking Woods to Swansea had been distracting for the midfielder. But the switch hit a snag yesterday as a deal involving Swansea midfielder Sam Clucas, who was due to link up with Premier League Burnley, broke down.
It is believed that any incomings Swansea make are subject to Clucas leaving the club.
It would be the second time this summer Town have received a cash windfall as part of a sell-on clause after former defender Connor Goldson left Brighton and joined Steven Gerrard’s Rangers.
Salop had a similar 20 per cent sell-on clause.
Goldson and Woods left Town in the summer of 2015. Goldson joined Brighton for £600,000 while Woods’s move to Brentford was thought to be worth up to £1m.
