John Askey: Shrewsbury's Lee Angol will take time to get up to speed
Boss John Askey has hinted it may take a bit of time for Shrewsbury Town’s new striker Lee Angol to get up to speed.
The 24-year-old was Salop’s 15th signing of the summer, joining late on deadline day from Mansfield for an undisclosed fee.
He was not in the squad at Charlton, though, with Lenell John-Lewis, who came on and scored, named among the substitutes instead.
“Lee has not played too many games and Lenny has looked really sharp in training,” said Askey.
“I thought it was only fair to stick with Lenny. He came on and brought us the energy he always brings. I was really pleased for him, getting that goal.
“Lee needs a little bit more training,” Askey admitted.
Captain Mat Sadler was dropped from Askey’s first XI to accommodate the centre-half pairing of Omar Beckles and new signing Luke Waterfall – who wore the captain’s armband.
Askey said after the game that the move had been made to help Shrewsbury deal with Charlton’s pace in attack.
Meanwhile, Askey insists ‘there is nothing as of yet’ in terms of a Sam Jones exit.
The 26-year-old midfielder, who joined on January deadline day from Grimsby Town when signed by former boss Paul Hurst, has barely featured under Askey.
It is thought he could soon join Scottish Premiership side Dundee.
“There’s nothing as of yet. With having so many players in, obviously we’ve got to look at moving one or two on as you don’t want too many in the squad,” said Askey.
“As yet, I’ve not heard anything. There’s one or two that if they’re not playing, they’re not going to be happy, so will be looking for games elsewhere.”
