Saturday’s draw with Portsmouth was the fourth match from nine this season that John Askey’s winless side have let a lead get away.

Town have been in front for more than 100 minutes in total this season but have not been able to register a victory.

They have now lost just once in six games and have the joint-highest draws in League One with four. On-loan Rangers man Docherty, who netted the opener at Fratton Park, said honest exchanges took place afterwards.

“It is hugely frustrating. However, it’s part and parcel of football –it’s not going to go your way all of the time,” said the midfielder, who turned 22 on Monday.

“It’s about how you react. We’ve just got to stick together.

“It was a very frustrated dressing room. There were some harsh words, a few truths said – and they had to be said. There’s no point putting the work in and then letting yourself down with silly mistakes.

“We’re desperate to eradicate that. We’ve just got to keep working hard and keep believing in what we’re doing.

“Once we get that first win, I’m sure that will be a springboard for us.”

Askey, whose side entertain Southend on Saturday, has been largely impressed with his side’s displays – up until the final third – this season.

The one time he was critical was after the defeat at Luton on August 25 where Town’s players were told to ‘man up’ after twice letting a lead slip.

Docherty added: “At Luton, the second half was nowhere near good enough and we know that as pros. We let ourselves down that day and over the last two weeks, we should have killed those games off – be a bit wiser, street smart.

“If it had been us scoring late on to get the point (at Portsmouth), we would’ve been delighted. But we’ve gifted them a goal really.”
