A boosted, season-high crowd of 9,007 packed into Montgomery Waters Meadow to see Town go down 2-0 to promotion favourites Sunderland .

Askey’s team were unable to build on a positive first half and conceded twice in the second period through an Omar Beckles own goal and Luke O’Nien. It leaves Town on just two league wins from 14 games and 18th in the standings.

Shrewsbury entertain another relegated Championship side, Barnsley, tomorrow and Askey believes his team showed enough against the Black Cats to merit fans turning out again.

“It was great to see it full, we were just disappointed not to send them home happy,” he said. “But for the players it’s great to play in atmospheres like that.

“Hopefully those that came enjoyed it and will come back again.”
