Sam Ricketts expects Greg Docherty to stay at Shrewsbury Town
Manager Sam Ricketts expects impressive midfielder Greg Docherty to remain at Shrewsbury Town for the entirety of the season.
The on-loan Rangers man, 22, has caught the eye with a series of energetic displays while weighing in with seven goals and a bagful of assists.
The loan deal is for the whole 2018/19 season, but the boyhood Rangers fan’s classy displays have led to fears that Gers boss Steven Gerrard may recall him early.
Gerrard was torn when asked last month if he would opt to bring Docherty back earlier than planned, but Ricketts is confident he will stay in Shropshire.
“I think so, there’s been no mention of him going back at all,” said Ricketts.
“Like I said, I think he’s settled here, playing well, and I think the whole idea of him coming here was to enjoy it and play football, learning and improve.
“There have been a couple of conversations (with Rangers), not myself, and they’re really pleased with how he’s progressing.
“They sent him here to learn and progress and that’s exactly what is happening.
“I think they’ve come out and said it’s better off him to stay here and keep progressing like he has done because he is playing very well.
“But there’s plenty for him to learn and keep improving.”
Ricketts recently described Docherty, one of the standouts since the former Wales international took charge, as Town’s ‘Duracell Bunny’.
“I like his attitude as much as anything,” added Ricketts.
“His attitude is that he really wants to be a footballer. It’s what he thinks about, he prepares himself as well as he can.”
Meanwhile, Town’s Central League Cup semi-final clash with AFC Bournemouth has been set for Wednesday, January 23 (1pm).
The game kicks-off at 1pm and admission is free through the gates by blocks 6 and 7.
