New-boys will spur us on, says Shrewsbury Town goalkeeper Steve Arnold

Boss Sam Ricketts has so far made two signings during the January transfer window – bringing in midfielders Dave Edwards and Brad Walker, though the latter is back on loan at Wrexham.

Five have gone out the Montgomery Waters Meadow exit door as Luke Hendrie became the latest, joining Grimsby permanently. More departures are expected.

Arnold, 29, saw fellow goalkeeper Joel Coleman return to parent club Huddersfield this week, with Shrewsbury casting an eye for a keeper to replace him.

The current Town No.1 was asked about new signings keeping players on their toes. He said: “Definitely. That’s the name of the game.

“As soon as you start resting on your laurels out there (on the pitch) or in training then that’s it.

“You could be gone, out the team and in the wilderness. It’s not just for games, in training you’ve got to be 100 per cent all of the time.

“If he brings players in then it’s great, it’s only going to benefit the squad as a whole and the team as a whole.

“We look forward to faces coming in and faces going, that’s football unfortunately. It’s how you deal with it.”

Arnold, who has been taken to fondly by Town fans, said: “Everyone’s getting to know each other a little more now, everyone knows who they are and what buttons to press and not to press.”

Ricketts has a decision to make regarding his goalkeepers for today’s League One visit of Charlton.

Youth keeper Cameron Gregory (stress fracture) is injured, leaving a place on the substitutes’ bench for either first-team coach Danny Coyne or other young, untested options.

First-choice for the under-18s and Wales schoolboy international Jack Atkinson, 18, is the likely option, or Sam Agius, who is not 17 until March.
