Greg Docherty: 'Nightmare' Shaun Whalley is a dream to play with

On-loan fans’ favourite Greg Docherty is amazed Shaun Whalley has not played at a higher level after admitting he is constantly learning from Town’s wing wizard.

Rangers midfielder Docherty has been a smash hit in his season at Montgomery Waters Meadow and has recently been used in an attacking midfield role alongside Shrewsbury stalwart Whalley.

Docherty, 22, hopes to bring up his 50th Town appearance by the end of his loan and needs one more goal to reach an impressive tally of 10 for Sam Ricketts’ side.

But the Gers man, who has been aiming to impress Ibrox chief Steven Gerrard with his displays this season, says he learned from the quality Whalley, 31, consistently shows.

“Shaun is exceptional. I’m surprised he’s not played at a higher level, but of course he came into the game late,” said Docherty.

“It’s a credit to Shaun how good he’s been. He’s a seven out of 10 minimum each week and that’s maybe doing him a disservice.

“His quality on the ball is fantastic, he’s a nightmare for defenders, I’m watching and learning from him.

“We actually haven’t managed a few goals between us in the last few games but we’ve certainly created chances and if we keep doing that then it’ll come.”

Former non-league flyer Whalley, who is out of contract this summer, has three goals from 33 appearances this season but missed four months through injury.

Another of Town’s stars to receive praise from Docherty was exciting youngster Ro-Shaun Williams.

“Ro-Shaun has been outstanding since he’s come in. The consistency he’s showing is different class,” the midfielder said of the 20-year-old.

“You can see he’s come through a proper youth set-up. But credit to him, he chose to come to League One and play men’s football.

I think he’s got a big future ahead of him.”
