The Welshman, who returned to Shrewsbury in January, has endured setback after setback this term.

He joined Town on his way back from a long-term knee problem before a groin injury on his debut was followed by a straight red card and the ankle injury sustained in training.

The 33-year-old posted on Twitter: "It wasn't quite the fairytale I hoped for.

"Picking up niggles and a suspension have plagued the last few months. As frustrating as it (ankle surgery) is, it has brought a bit of closure to a tough 2018/19 season."

The Town fan and Salop academy graduate added: "Having said that this season did bring about the dream return to Shrewsbury which I am really grateful for and excited for next season already.

"The surgery was successful and I now have a great opportunity to put in some good hard work over the summer to get myself fit, strong and fully ready for the start of next season so I can show Salop fans what I'm really capable of."

Edwards has managed just six appearances since returning from Reading in January, starting three times under former Wolves team-mate Sam Ricketts.
