Sam Ricketts: Shaun Whalley qualities make him a big League One talent

Whalley, who joined Town in 2015, has extended his Shrewsbury stay into a fifth season and beyond and is an extremely popular member of the Shrews squad.

Ricketts and Whalley have a positive relationship and the boss believes Whalley can do things many other attackers in the division struggle with.

"Shaun is a very, very good player and has proved it for a number of years at this level," said Ricketts.

"He's got ability, he can do things that an awful lot of players at this level can't do. It's great for the club that we agreed for him to stay.

"He has brilliant ability and skills, he can unlock defences and has real good ability for assists and goals.

"He's a real threat in the attacking area and a player we're delighted to have."

Whalley, 31, has made 159 appearances for Town in four seasons, scoring 25 goals.

He was an integral part of the team that made the League One play-off final last season.

Ricketts insists that the winger, who has missed football through injury this term, is showing no sign of slowing down and continues to pose a threat to defences.

The Town chief added that the No.7 is a big part to his plans moving forward.

"He's really devoted to football and loves football," added Ricketts. "He was desperate to stay as well. It's great to get it agreed early.

"Shaun is one of those that just wants to go looking for the ball, if you can get him on the ball in the final third he's a big threat.

"That's what we try to do all the time, get him as much of the ball as we can.

"He moves really well with really good energy, speed, work rate and a desire to succeed and be successful. He's been great. we're delighted.

"We have a great relationship, I like his attitude and desire to be a footballer. He's really enjoying it here.

"He loves the club, loves what we're trying to do and knows he's a big part of that."
