Shaun Whalley signs new two-year Shrewsbury Town contract

The winger, 31, will remain at Salop into his fifth season as he penned terms until the summer of 2021.

Whalley has made 159 appearances for Town since 2015, scoring 25 goals.

Popular Salop No.7 Whalley missed four months of this season through muscle injury but has still played 36 times this term and been a constant threat since returning in February.

The Liverpudlian revealed he snubbed interest from elsewhere, stating his only desire was to continue his Shropshire stay, before adding boss Sam Ricketts was also a big part in the decision.

"I'm glad to stay here for another couple of years now," said Whalley. "Hopefully we'll have some good times.

"I did have interest elsewhere but I only really wanted to stay at Shrewsbury and I'm glad it's done.

"It's great to have the support. Ever since I've come here the fans have taken to me. I've been here for four years now and hopefully it'll be six.

"I'm delighted with it."

Town are languishing in 17th this term but Whalley says he has clicked with Ricketts and added his belief in Ricketts' regime to go one better than the Salop side that missed out on promotion to the Championship in last year's play-off final.

"I'm a loyal person, I always wanted to stay here for the future. The manager has taken to me since coming in and I've taken to him," added Whalley.

"We both get along with each other and it's massive reason why I'm staying because I believe in the manager.

"Shrewsbury means a lot to me. Obviously I want to see us doing better in the league. Last year was an amazing year.

"I just want to replicate that year but with going up as well. It's going to be tough but I believe in the manager to do as well as he can and hopefully we'll do well."
