Sam Ricketts' men were poor in an underwhelming first half and fell behind but Daniel Udoh equalised shortly after the break, just before Jason Lowe's red card for lowly hosts.

Town reporter Lewis Cox gives his verdict on how the Town squad fared.

Max O'Leary - The goalkeeper had to watch Thibaud Verlinden’s finish sail over head having been caught far enough out of his goal to be punished. Didn’t have much else to do, but will be smarting that a couple of feet further back and he could have clawed away Bolton’s goal. 5

Ro-Shaun Williams - A return to the back three after a couple of games on the bench and he did look sharp and in the mood. Unfortunately, Ronan Darcy’s pass for Bolton’s goal came between Williams and Ethan Ebanks-Landell and should have been dealt with better. 6

Ethan Ebanks-Landell - Like Williams, he was culpable for the goal which was far too sloppy for a Sam Ricketts side to concede. He was good in the air as usual and did well for the most part against a handful in Daryl Murphy. Has perhaps dropped a level or two in last couple of games. 6

Aaron Pierre - Had the better afternoon of Town’s back three without being at his rip-roaring best. So unlucky to have a header cleared off the line late on before he thumped a stinging strike not too far wide. Always carries a threat and calmness. 6

Donald Love - Some of his play was rash on what was an off-day for the former Sunderland man. Got into some decent positions but final ball was way off in the first half. Did improve after the break but was not quite his day. Confident he can respond well. 5

Ollie Norburn - Was the pick of the bunch playing at his hometown club. Brought good urgency on and off the ball especially given recent poor health. Fortunately Norburn managed to escape bad injury after Jason Lowe’s poor tackle. Helped Town probe in second half. 7

Josh Laurent - Wasn’t alone in having a poor first half but improved after the break, where he showed the drive that was missing in the first half. Denied by a stunning Remi Matthews save at the end and unlucky with Shaun Whalley in his way for Town’s offside goal. 6

Scott Golbourne - Uncharacteristically lacked a little bit of quality on the ball. Started OK with some good early signs behind the returning Ryan Giles but his impact wore off. Ever willing down the left but crosses slightly off-target. Skied decent late chance to win it. 5

Shaun Whalley - Missed Shrewsbury’s only good opportunity of the first half, albeit a dipping half-volley from some 30 yards. Guilty of some poor passing before the break but really turned it on afterwards in both general and dead ball play. His work created the equaliser. 6

Ryan Giles - A first league start in more than two months for the teenager who does bring a different threat to Town’s team with his lightning pace and direct running. No shortage of crosses flung into Bolton box, some better than others, and he is happy to shoot on sight. 6

Daniel Udoh - Started the game very well and looked like he was going to be a real handful for the home defence. His influence wore off as Bolton defenders began to cope but Udoh never stopped working and got his just rewards with a cool finish. 7
