Shrewsbury Town set for a busy transfer deadline day
Shrewsbury Town are poised for a busy transfer deadline day – with additions and exits both on the cards at Montgomery Waters Meadow.
Town are thought to be working on several deals ahead of tonight’s 11pm deadline after recording their first victory since manager Steve Cotterill was taken ill with Covid-19.
Cotterill, watching on from hospital, joined in the celebrations via telephone at full-time as his side swept aside in-form Peterborough thanks to a stunning brace from new-boy Harry Chapman.
And the absent boss will be in touch with chief executive Brian Caldwell and head of recruitment Keith Burt as Shrewsbury try to add more quality to the ranks.
Town are believed to be working on deals for at least three positions, with a number of options live as the window enters its final day.
The most high-profile has been their pursuit of Sunderland frontman Will Grigg.
Sunderland landed their forward target Ross Stewart last night, allowing Northern Ireland international Grigg the green light to depart on loan.
Grigg, 29, is likely to be given permission to leave the Stadium of Light on loan, but long-term admirers Oxford have rivalled Town’s interest. Sunderland may not be keen to send Grigg to a rival.
A loan deal was agreed last week, but the parent club dragged their feet while working on a Grigg replacement.
Salop are likely to be looking at alternatives in case they miss out on Grigg again, but will only move if an attractive option is available.
Shrewsbury also looked set to bring in highly-rated Stoke left wing-back Josh Tymon on loan. But confirmation of a deal that was thought to be all-but sealed has not been forthcoming.
Parent club Stoke had left-back Rhys Norrington-Davies sent off on Saturday and it remains to be seen if they will affect the switch.
Town are also understood to be keen on bringing Blackburn club captain Elliott Bennett, 32, back to Shropshire.
Telford-born Bennett worked under Cotterill at Bristol City and would be an option in midfield and at right wing-back.
Bennett is out of contract at Ewood Park in the summer. A loan deal could be finalised today or Town will revisit the move at the end of the season.
Departures both up front and in midfield are possible.
