Sean Goss: Shrewsbury Town excited for what is ahead
Midfielder Sean Goss admits everyone at Shrewsbury is excited for the rest of the season following the team’s outstanding run of form.
Both Town and Goss have had their campaigns transformed ever since Steve Cotterill replaced Sam Ricketts as manager back in November.
Salop were rooted in the relegation zone and sitting just one point above rock-bottom Wigan when the 56-year-old arrived.
Goss, meanwhile, had been frozen out by former boss Ricketts, with the former Rangers loanee not even registered to play in League One.
Since Cotterill’s arrival, though, the midfielder has become more and more influential and capped an outstanding display against MK Dons on Tuesday with two goals.
And Town too are also looking up with the team, having lost just two league games since the manager walked through the door at Montgomery Waters Meadow – with that run meaning they are 10 points clear of the bottom three and 12 behind six-placed Doncaster.
“Since the gaffer has come in things have changed massively – I think everyone can see that with the results we’ve had,” Goss said. “The big thing is that we don’t fear anyone.
“I think we have proved what we can do with the wins we have got.
“For us, we have got our goals for the rest of the season and we are looking up the table rather than behind us.
“This team is really enjoyable to play in at the moment and I’m excited for the rest of the season.
“The season is not over for us.
“We have our aims and we will just continue trying to climb the table and we’ll see where it takes us.”
Goss’s brace against MK Dons were his first league goals for Shrewsbury. Striker Curtis Main also opened his Town account in the game. And Goss admits he is now eager to start chipping in on a more regular basis.
“It’s been a long time coming,” the 25-year-old said when asked how he felt to get his first league goal. “I’ve been desperate to get that first one.
“Hopefully I can build on that now and start chipping in with some goals.
“It was good for Mainy to get off the mark as well.”
Assistant manager Aaron Wilbraham was once again Town’s man on the touchline against MK Dons, with Cotterill at home recovering from Covid-19.
The boss did speak to the players at full-time via video link.
And Goss revealed – while happy with the overall display – Cotterill wasn’t pleased with the two goals they conceded in the 4-2 win.
“The three points were massive for us, and getting the goals as well – four goals at home against a good side,” Goss added. “They were top of the form table, they are a team that has been doing really well.
“But we prepared really well for the game.
“And that preparation paid off with the result.
“But we we’re disappointed we didn’t collect a clean sheet as well.
“The gaffer said that afterwards.
“It was a big win but he also made it clear he wasn’t happy with the goals we conceded. I think that says everything.
“You beat a team that’s in form, but you can’t get comfortable.
“And we’ve now got a very big game away at Bristol Rovers on Saturday.”
