Town were the better side in the first period but fell behind as former striker Fejiri Okenabirhie netted on his first return to Montgomery Waters Meadow, after a costly Ethan Ebanks-Landell slip.

The hosts creating numerous decent goalscoring openings in the first period but could not find a way through against a Rovers side who had lost five on the spin and not won in nine games.

But Salop failed to repeat their promising first half and did not get going after the break. Doncaster's Taylor Richards sealed the win with a neat finish after an error from Town substitute Brad Walker.

Wilbraham said of the lacklustre second half display: "It wasn't a lack of effort, the boys were fully focused to do the same again, the gaffer put the belief into them to do it again.

"He didn't ring me once in the first half, he was comfortable, we couldn't do anything about Ethan's slip and he told the boys to carry on doing what they were doing, but for some reason we couldn't get going in the second half.

"To score another breakaway goal really killed the game."

The Town No.2 said: "I thought the first half we were really good, obviously you can't legislate for Ethan slipping over, it was unlucky and against the run of play, similar to Tuesday.

"We were really good in the first half but we just couldn't get the ball in the net, things were dropping for us and we were slashing at them but we had the better of the play.

"We were unfortunate to go in 1-0 down, the message for the second half was 'more of the same'.

"We didn't let the goal we concede effect us, we wanted to keep driving the game on but we just couldn't get going and didn't get out of the traps like we planned to and wanted to.

"The second goal takes the wind out of our sails and we couldn't get back in the game after that."

Ro-Shaun Williams was substituted off at half-time for Walker. The defender endured a difficult first period in which his pass led to Ebanks-Landell's slip, Wilbraham explained that Steve Cotterill's decision at the break was tactical.

"The gaffer wanted Brad to step in a little bit more with the ball and in the first 10 or 15 minutes he was finding good passes into areas," Wilbraham added.

"He did that well, it was nothing against Ro-Shaun who has been brilliant, and that was it."

Academy striker Charlie Caton was introduced for his league debut with 15 minutes left, but Doncaster were gifted the chance to double their advantage.

Sean Goss (hamstring) and Rekeil Pyke (calf) both missed out on the matchday squad after feeling niggles in training on Friday.
