Dave Edwards: Chey Dunkley is a big miss for Shrewsbury – he’s a real leader
Chey Dunkley’s injury is a blow for Shrewsbury.
He was so important last season and played every single game. He’s a real leader at the heart of defence and so impressive in both boxes.
Him missing pre-season is really unfortunate. He’s the type of character you want on the training pitch every day. He’s very vocal and he demands of people and sets standards.
Losing him will be a blow and I’m sure Matt Taylor will be disappointed. The good news is that it doesn’t seem like a long-term injury.
An Achilles injury for three to four weeks can be problematic and nag at you, depending on the severity of it. Fingers crossed it gets sorted quickly.
He is suspended for the first game of the season anyway, so the manager would have had to look at different options for that opening game against Cheltenham, but for him to miss the pre-season games will be a big loss.
If he’s fit and available, he’s someone you want in the team straight away. Come the second game of the season, I imagine Matt Taylor would want to put him straight in, but if he hasn’t played in pre-season it will be difficult. He may need more time.
