Dave Edwards: Chey Dunkley’s early dismissal meant Shrewsbury were done for
Losing a player as influential as Chey Dunkley so early into a game was always going to have a knock-on effect.
He is a player who has been such an important part of the team since he arrived, it is a huge loss to lose him for three games – so it really is a double blow.
From that moment on, the game sort of ran away from Shrewsbury, and it was damage limitation as they needed to hold out for as long as they could at 0-0.
Unfortunately, Wigan broke the deadlock in the first half and it was always a tough prospect from there.
Before the sending-off, Dunkley had two choices from that position. He makes the tackle and risks getting sent off if he does not get it right or it lets him go through and hopes Marko Marosi can make the save. The latter was the better option in hindsight but in that moment, you have a split second to make a decision and you cannot weigh up all the pros and cons.
