TNS keep up the good work at Bangor

Manager Craig Harrison hailed another strong defensive showing as The New Saints maintained their miserly form to stay five points clear at the top.

A goal in each half sealed a 2-0 victory at Bangor City to stretch TNS' unbeaten campaign to 12 games in all competitions.

The Welsh Premier League leaders have chalked up eight clean sheets in that run, while conceding just four goals.

Ryan Edwards gave the defending champions the perfect start when pouncing on a loose ball to find the net in just the second minute.

Bangor gave as good as they got in the first half, carving a couple of promising positions, but their challenge faded in the second period.

Aeron Edwards doubled the advantage on the hour, when converting Simon Spender's low cross.

The Saints had chances late on to add to their tally with Greg Draper and Edwards both denied by excellent saves from goalkeeper Connor Roberts.

Harrison was more than happy with the efforts of his charges who put themselves on course for the points with an early breakthrough.

He said: "I thought we played very well, made a good start by scoring after two minutes and managed the game well after that.

"We have scored early in a number of games this season, which makes a big difference when you're so solid defensively.

"For us, it was another clean sheet, that's seven in the league, eight in all, and we've only conceded four goals.

"Bangor are the best team we have played, in both games they have caused problems and should be a top six team.

"They didn't have a lot of clear chances, which was testament to the way we defended, while we could have scored a few more."

Having netted 14 goals in their last two visits to Bangor, the league leaders were in confident mood.

And their spirits were further boosted by an early breakthrough when Ryan Edwards smashed home the rebound, after Greg Draper's shot had been saved.

Bangor were stung into immediate action with Sion Edwards putting a 25-yard effort just wide, before heading a Christian Langos cross narrowly over moments later.

Wrexham loanee striker Joe Williams then powered his shot just wide of goalkeeper Paul Harrison's left-hand post, as City went for the equaliser.

As the match began to settle down, TNS strengthened their grip and had chances to extend their lead with Scott Quigley, looking to add to his tally of five goals from two games, crashing a fierce strike just wide.

Defender Kai Edwards then spurned a good opening when volleying just past the past the post from close range from Chris Seargeant's cross.

Tthe hosts saw Sam Hart curl a 25-yard free kick just wide right on half time.

After the interval, the Saints lost goalscorer Ryan Edwards through an ankle ligaments injury before Draper lobbed over.

But the visitors gave themselves some breathing space with a second goal on 62 minutes as Aeron Edwards finished off Spender's inviting pass.

Quigley then put a shot over from the edge of the box, while Adrian Cieslewicz's strike just clipped the post.

Now two goals down, Bangor rarely looked likely to retrieve the game despite their efforts and TNS went close to adding to their tally late on.

First, Draper broke clear only to be denied by keeper Roberts who also produced a terrific save to keep out Edwards, who met Chris Marriott's cross with a firm header from close range.
