Mike goes Wilde for his 150th league goal

Mike Wilde savoured his 150th league goal as The New Saints maintained their tight grip at the top of the Welsh Premier with victory over Newtown.

After the sides shared a thrilling 2-2 draw on Boxing Day, the unbeaten Saints proved too hot to handle as they got back on the winning trail after three draws.

Wilde was delighted to reach his landmark with his side's fourth goal after neatly finishing off a well-worked move with Ryan Edwards to take his tally to an impressive 150 goals in 210 league starts.

He said: "Somebody mentioned it a few days before, saying I was close to 150, so they checked it out and found I was just one goal short.

"It was not something that played on my mind, but it is a good milestone to have – although some people may say that I should have had a few more!

"I have enjoyed a lot of success for TNS, I have a lot of fond memories. All the goals have been special.

"I particularly remember those that have led to us winning the title, while I also enjoyed the hat-trick in the Champions League in the summer.

"I don't think we've ever questioned our ability, but we're not accustomed to draws as much as defeats.

"I thought we were unfortunate in the first game against Newtown and we wanted to rectify that and we went out with the right attitude."

Wilde's strike sealed a comfortable victory for the Saints, who led at the break through Adrian Cieslewicz.

Jamie Mullan and Ryan Edwards produced excellent finishes to make it 3-0 after the interval.

Neil Mitchell pulled one back with an overhead kick on 74 minutes to revive the Robins.

But any thoughts of a fightback were dispelled as Wilde brought up his landmark when slotting into the corner after linking well with Edwards.

Victory kept the Saints 10 points clear at the summit and maintained their unbeaten record, while leaving Newtown sweating on a top-six spot.

Wilde had his chances to bring up his milestone long before finally finding the net on 76 minutes, while Cieslewicz was also in the thick of the action as he went close on several occasions.

Boss Craig Harrison felt his side were well worth their victory against Newtown with a performance that underlined their Welsh Premier League title credentials.

He said: "For the first half hour it was not a good game in general for either side but, after that, I felt we controlled the game.

"We were comfortable, and very good on the counter-attack with our pace and athleticism. The front four were excellent and Mike gave us a platform to build off."

Harrison was delighted to see his side get back to winning ways after three matches without a victory.

He added: "It was nice to have a little bit of pressure and see our boys play under a bit of pressure, because it's not often we draw three.

"But the belief was always there and you saw that in the second-half performance at Newtown.

"It was just a case of being patient, keep doing what we were doing and riding out the storm, although it's a bit embarrassing to call three draws a storm."
