The New Saints gunning for more history

The New Saints look to write another chapter in the history books when they take on Bala Town in tomorrow's final of the JD Welsh Cup at the Bangor University Stadium.

As well as aiming to lift the trophy for a fourth successive season, the Saints can also clinch an unprecedented third successive treble having again landed the Welsh Premier title and Nathaniel MG Cup earlier this year.

The runaway champions have dominated throughout the campaign, setting a world record of 27 successive league wins to finish 27 points clear of their nearest rivals.

And they now want to round off a stunning campaign with another piece of silverware before taking a short summer break ahead of the Champions League qualifiers.

Standing in their way of a 'treble' treble will be third-placed Bala Town who, by a quirk of the fixture list, provided the opposition for TNS' final league action last Saturday.

With both sides having one eye on their Welsh Cup showdown, the Saints ran out 6-4 winners at Maes Tegid to take their league goal tally to 101.

Boss Craig Harrison, who has been linked to the vacant manager's job at Hartlepool, says the cup holders will again be attack-minded for tomorrow's final against a Bala side who have never defeated the Saints in competitive action.

"Our aim is always to go out and score goals, that's the way we play," he said. "Last Saturday was a fantastic game, that's the way I believe football should be played. It was a great advert for the Welsh Premier.

"We spoke before the season that we didn't score as many goals as we should do, and we've certainly put that right."

For the final, Harrison's main headache will be over who to leave out.

"We've got 22 or 23 players who all deserve a place in the squad, so the problem will be who to leave out," he said. "But that's the way it has been in my time with the club.

"We will be doing our utmost to defend the trophy which we have won for the last three years. It's a competition that is close to our hearts.

"Even now, it has been a fantastic season, and winning the treble again would really top it off."

Defender Phil Baker will bring down the curtain on a 12-year career with the Saints after the final which will be screened live on S4C, with a 2pm kick off.
