The Saints were beaten 4-1 by Scottish Championship side St Mirren in the last four in 2016/17, but are returning to the competition – which will expand further to include two League of Ireland sides.

TNS star Alex Darlington said: “We’re looking forward to the competition again. Having two teams in from the Republic of Ireland is going to be a good test and it will raise the standard.

“We’ll have to be even better this time round to get to the semis but hopefully we can make the final and win it.”

Before last season, the competition traditionally featured side from Scotland’s lower leagues.
