Gibraltar champions FC Europa are the visitors to Park Hall (7pm) in the first qualifying round first leg, writes John Bridgwater.

They have proven goalscorers in Guillermo Roldan and Kike Gome, and include Gibraltar international Liam Walker in midfield.

However, consistent performances in recent years have shown the Saints are beginning to transfer their dominance of the Welsh Premier League on to Europe’s big stage.

It is an exciting prospect for the management team of Scott Ruscoe and Steve Evans who have the task of filling the shoes of record-breaking boss Craig Harrison.

“Every year we look to improve on every aspect of our game and preparation,” said Ruscoe. “FC Europa are a decent team with some quality players, and we will give them the respect they deserve.

“But if we’re on our A game, then there is no reason why we can’t get the right result. Everything has gone well and we have left no stone unturned in our preparation.”

Having recently joined Hartlepool as manager, Harrison will make a point of attending tonight’s match having kept in close contact with TNS since his departure,

“We had a good working relationship over the last five-and-a-half years, and we still keep in touch. I speak to him every couple of days and it’s great he will be at the game,” added Ruscoe.

“To be involved in the Champions League in your first competitive game as manager is a very proud moment, and I’m looking forward to the tie. The town gets behind the lads in these games, and we’re hoping for a big crowd which makes a big difference.”

The 11-times Welsh Premier champions will be at full strength, with new signings, defender Blaine Hudson, and midfielder Matt Holland, in the squad along with TNS academy player Ben Clark who has impressed since stepping up to the first team.

Keeper Paul Harrison will be making his 31st appearance in Europe, overtaking Ruscoe who has played 30 times. But he will still be two games behind former TNS defender Phil Baker who has 33. The away leg will be played in Portugal next Tuesday.
