The New Saints targeting upset

The New Saints are raring to go again as they gear up for a challenging UEFA Champions League excursion away to Croatian high-flyers HNK Rijeka at Stadion Rujevica tonight.

Just a week after their 3-1 extra-time victory over Gibraltar side FC Europa in Portugal, the Saints are on their travels again – and facing an even trickier assignment in the second qualifying round.

Despite the quick turnaround and another lengthy journey, interim manager Scott Ruscoe is confident his side will be fresh and up for the challenge as they look to keep their hopes alive in Europe’s biggest competition.

“The fact we are travelling again so soon does not worry us, we expect that, and these are the games you want to be involved in,” said Ruscoe.

“Croatia is a lovely place to visit, and we go there in good shape with two more games under our belt. We’re looking stronger now and our fitness levels are getting better.

“Everyone is ready to go again. We have done our homework, and are up to speed on what to expect.

“They are an excellent side who only lost two games last season. We know it is going to be a challenge, but it is a challenge everyone is looking forward to.

“Our aim is to keep the tie alive for when we get them back on our 3G pitch at Park Hall next week.”

Left-back Chris Marriott remains on the sidelines with a knee injury, but midfielder Chris Seargeant – who missed the trip to the Algarve following a car accident – is back in the squad

Overcoming Rijeka will be no mean feat after they won last season’s Croatian First League by two points to deny Dinamo Zagreb a 12th successive title.

The Croatians boast a wealth of experience on the European stage, having participated in UEFA competitions on 17 occasions.

They have twice reached the group stages of the Europa League in recent times.
