Clubs in the Welsh top flight have been told they can prepare for the return of fixtures after the government’s National Sport Group (NSG) reinstated the division’s elite status. That is despite Wales remaining at the highest alert level of the Welsh Government Control Plan.

TNS – who are three points clear at the summit of reigning champions Connah’s Quay Nomads, having played a game more – were allowed to continue training and playing friendlies during lockdown because of their professional status.

However, when the NSG removed the Cymru Premier’s elite status, it was decided to halt the league all together – even though its few professional clubs would have been allowed to carry on.

Saints thrashed Airbus UK 5-0 last night in the latest behind-closed-doors friendly played under strict Covid-19 protocols. Greg Draper hit a hat-trick and Adrian Cieslewicz a brace.

The Welsh Premier Women’s League has also had its elite status reinstated by the NSG.
