TNS caretaker considers changes in attack
Caretaker boss Chris Seargeant is pondering changes in attack when The New Saints visit Haverfordwest County this Saturday.
Seargeant, the club’s head of coaching, has begun preparations for his first match in temporary charge of the Cymru Premier leaders since their decision to axe Scott Ruscoe and No.2 Steve Evans on Sunday.
The duo were dismissed after TNS were held to a goalless draw by Bala Town, a result which saw their lead over reigning champions Connah’s Quay cut to just a single point.
Sergeant said: “Gone are the days when you win the league by 20 points. It is all about fine margins now and I don’t think we can keep making excuses.
“The lads have got to put the ball in the back of the net and if we need to freshen up a couple of things at the top of the pitch, we will do that.
“Whoever comes in, the bottom line is they have to score goals. If they don’t someone else will get a chance. We have to be more clinical.
“Before you know it if you are making excuses the games pass you by, you are dropping points and playing catch-up. It needs to happen now.
“It is not all doom and gloom. We are in a great position.
“The weekend was alright but alright doesn’t win leagues. I’ll look to make a decision tomorrow, maybe freshen things up at the top end of the pitch.”
Seargeant also took time to praise Ruscoe and Evans, who had been targeting a third Welsh title in four seasons at the club before being relieved of their duties.
He said: “The club has lost two massive characters, club icons if you like. It has been a couple of days of adjusting, the lads and myself. I am just doing what is asked of me at the moment.
“I think it is important to recognise what they have done. The chairman has made a decision for now and asked me to do a job for now. It is just about getting the lads going.”
Seargeant continued: “People will look at the changes being made when we are still top of the league, with the league effectively in our hands.
“But it is what it is. The lads need to kick on now. I think we have brought some good players in and kicked on a bit this season.
“Saturday we probably controlled the ball better. We just need to get back to being ruthless and clinical and what TNS teams do.”
