TNS looking to progress on another cup front
The New Saints will be targeting progress in another cup competition when they host lower division Gresford Athletic in the quarter-finals of the Nathaniel MG Cup tonight (7.45).
Having recently advanced in both the SPFL Trust Trophy – Saints will host Scottish club Arbroath in the last eight next month – and also the JD Welsh Cup with a 5-0 win at Ruthin Town last week, Craig Harrison’s side now turn their focus to another competition.
Saints have beaten Connah’s Quay Nomads and Porthmadog in the previous rounds to reach this stage of the Nathaniel MG Cup.
Gresford Athletic, tonight’s visitors to Park Hall, are currently seventh in the JD Cymru North.
Saints are now unbeaten in their last 17 games all competitions.
Their last defeat was a 3-2 reverse against Swift Hesperange in Luxembourg on August 1 as they were knocked out of the UEFA Europa Conference League.
Brad Young, the former Aston Villa striker, led the way for Saints in their latest victory, Saturday’s 6-2 win at Barry Town United, which kept them three points clear at the top of the JD Cymru Premier. It was his first hat-trick for the club since signing for TNS earlier this season. “I’m delighted obviously to get my first hat-trick here and my first professional hat-trick,” said Young. “Hopefully a lot more to come.
“When I’ve previously got two goals in other games, I’ve been disappointed not getting it, so I’m happy that I’ve got it and pleased for the team obviously just to get the three points because that’s what matters really and truly.”
