Williams, currently the bookies favourite to replace Carlos Corberan in The Hawthorns hotseat, joked there would be little chance of him getting the job if anyone from the Baggies watched his Swans team collapse to a 4-0 defeat at Portsmouth on New Year’s Day.

The defeat ended a run of two straight wins for the Welsh side, who sit 12th in the Championship.

Williams said: “If they were at the game, I won’t be going anywhere, will I?

“(The rumours) can create uncertainty and people feel more comfortable when people have clarity, but I don’t think that had anything to do with the performance.”

The 44-year-old will be hoping for much better when his team host Albion tomorrow, on what is the eve of the first anniversary of his appointment at the Swansea.com Stadium.

Williams, who spent two years in charge of Swindon between 2015 and 2017 before then winning promotion from the National League with Notts County, guided the Swans to a 14th-placed finish last season. He had previously worked as assistant to Russell Martin at both MK Dons and Swansea.

Their form this season has been patchy, with the defeat at Portsmouth following good wins over QPR and Luton earlier in the festive period.

Williams said: "We looked like we were lacking focus and concentration and we got punished for that.

"It's very frustrating but that's where we are. We are not ready to consistently perform in a certain way. We are just not there yet."

Swansea are assessing Ben Cabango after the defender was forced off in the closing stages of their defeat with a groin injury.

“That is a concern for us,” said Williams.
