Kevin Doyle was today hoping to be available for a Wolves return for the season's opener against Aldershot.

The Ireland international missed Saturday's final friendly at Southampton – which Wolves lost 2-0 – with an infected shin.

But assistant boss Terry Connor said the £6.5m striker should be fit for the Capital One Cup tie at Molineux.

"Doyle got a whack against Walsall last week, but, typically of him, he trained for most of the week with a sore shin which unfortunately got infected. He's been on a course of antibiotics which meant he couldn't play at the weekend," said Connor. "Hopefully that will settle down over the next four or five days and we can have him back available towards the end of the week."

Connor said Steven Fletcher, who remains the subject of speculation over a Sunderland bid, is still being troubled by a minor ankle problem but Matt Jarvis (groin) could soon be fit.

"Matt Jarvis had an ongoing niggle throughout the week and we'll be looking at him on a day-to-day basis, whereas Fletcher's needed to settle down and we think we might need another period of time before he's fit to play," added Connor.

* Wolves were today being linked with a swoop for Poland international midfielder Slawomir Peszko.

The 27-year-old Cologne midfielder or winger, who has 24 caps, was reportedly at Compton for a medical this afternoon with a view to signing, although there was no confirmation from the club.

Peszko, 27, was signed by Cologne in January 2011, just four months before manager Stale Solbakken was appointed at the Bundesliga club.
