The Peterborough boss had been touted as a potential successor to Dean Saunders along with firm favourites Kenny Jackett, Owen Coyle and Steve McClaren.

Although the former Wolves midfielder is now quoted as 14-1 to land the job – making him sixth favourite – he had some support after twice leading Posh out of League One before they were relegated alongside Wolves this season.

The 41-year-old made 149 appearances for Wolves between 1994-99 but a Molineux return appears to have been dashed.

Posh chairman Darragh MacAnthony said on Twitter last week that Ferguson was staying at London Road.

And a Peterborough United source said today: "Darren is not in the running (for the Wolves job) which is a major surprise to us. We were bracing ourselves for an approach.

"I can't say we're unhappy. He has taken us to three promotions and we can now look forward to another.

"He plays the kind of game they love there but we're told there is no interest whatsoever."

Ferguson's removal from contention leaves the way clear for Jackett and Coyle, although it is understood McClaren hasn't yet been contacted by the club.

Interviews are still being held and a final decision could be two weeks away.

Meanwhile, Wolves this afternoon announced three pre-season friendlies, all away from home. They will travel to north Wales to face beaten Blue Square Bet Premier play-off finalists Wrexham on Tuesday, July 16, kick-off time to be confirmed.

Then Wolves go to Barnsley – who beat them to Championship survival this season – on Saturday, July 20 (3pm).

Wolves have also arranged a trip to face Chesterfield on Tuesday, July 23 (7.45pm), which brings a reunion with former Molineux favourite Paul Cook, now manager of the Derbyshire club.
