Kevin McDonald to discuss his Wolves future with Kenny Jackett
Kenny Jackett will this week have showdown talks with outcast midfielder Kevin McDonald – as he admitted his squad has 'glaring weaknesses'.
A crucial summer for the club awaits after Wolves ended the season with a 2-1 win over a weakened Sheffield Wednesday side on Saturday.
Decisions on the club's six out-of-contract players – Bjorn Sigurdarson, Tommy Rowe, Razak Boukari, Aaron McCarey, Zeli Ismail and Liam McAlinden – should be announced this week.
Jackett has already spoken of the need to do the summer transfer business as early as possible, with Jack Payne from Southend and Jason Cummings of Hibs two such targets.
And the Wolves boss will this week sit down with Scottish midfielder McDonald to thrash out his future.
The 27-year-old hasn't been seen in a Wolves shirt since March 8, with Jackett insisting he's merely wanted to try out different midfield combinations.
"For his overall situation we'll see next week," Jackett said. "He hasn't expressed a desire to leave. He understands there has to be some kind of summing up and that has been discussed as having been after the games have been completed.
"He's been professional and worked very hard in training.
"But he has been disappointed he hasn't been playing, which is understandable. He's been to see me (about why he's not in the team), we've had discussions."
And on whether McDonald will stay at the club, Jackett added: "It depends how the conversations go, how we shape our squad, what we have to spend and how we need to improve."
The Wolves boss pulled no punches in an assessment of his squad. He has spoken for weeks of the need to bring strikers into the club, and to have two first-team players in every position.
"We do have some strengths in the squad but we also have some glaring weaknesses," he said.
"Discussions are still to be had which are against the backdrop of the club still being up for sale.
"We know where we need to improve and we will be working towards it.
"After a succession of draws it was great to get the win on the final day.
"That can't mask what we need to do and where we need to improve.
"Be under no illusions – to get ourselves close to a top six side we have to improve, because in the end that was Sheffield Wednesday's second team."
