Paul Lambert: Wolves facing double Easter barometer

Games against Brighton and Leeds will represent a barometer for how far Wolves must go to mount a promotion bid, Paul Lambert believes.

League leaders Brighton visit Molineux tomorrow before Wolves go to fifth-placed Leeds on Easter Monday in a tough double header.

Wolves have tended to perform well against the big sides this season. And Lambert wants to see a reaction from his players after last weekend’s no-show against Bristol City.

He says they’re more than capable of denting Brighton’s title bid tomorrow. “It’s a good barometer for where we’re at – they’re great games for us,” Lambert said of Wolves’ Easter weekend fixtures.

“We always seem to perform when the bigger ones have come. I’ve got a lot of time for Chris Hughton, he’s done a great job.

“Garry’s done great at Leeds. They’re big crowds, big atmospheres, big games, everything you want.”

Hughton has led Brighton to the verge of promotion this season. They finished 20th in 2014/15, with Hughton taking over in December of that season, before losing out in the play-offs last year.

“You’ve got to be given time,” Lambert added. “Fair play to Brighton, they’ve done it that way.

“Big credit to Chris, it looks like they’re going to do it, bar an absolute disaster. He’s a nice guy as well.

“For us it’s a big test because they’re just about going to do it, but we have to make sure we beat them.

“We’re more than capable of doing that – if we’re on our game everyone knows we’re capable.”

After the Bristol City defeat Lambert was as publicly critical of his players as he’s been since taking charge in November.

He’s keen for his players to show the kind of consistency that had led league leaders Brighton to earn 86 points from their 41 matches so far.

He said of his players: “Week in, week out, show me that moving forward you want to try and get to the big level.

“If you ask everybody, they all want to get to the Premier League.”
