Wolves transfer news: Paul Lambert looking to buy British
Paul Lambert will focus much of his attention on the domestic transfer market this summer as he attempts to forge a promotion-challenging squad.
Wolves signed 10 players from overseas last summer and a number of them – Ola John, Paul Gladon, Joao Teixeira and Prince Oniangue – have been surplus to requirements under Lambert, with Silvio making his first appearance under the Scot on Tuesday.
Lambert's two January signings – Ben Marshall and Andreas Weimann – joined from fellow Championship clubs and the head coach suggested that's the direction he go in this summer.
"I will look at the domestic league because there's good players here," he said.
"If you look at people's games record, if they can play more than 35 games and you get most of those right you get a really strong squad and you can churn them out and play Saturday-Tuesday-Saturday-Tuesday.
"You look at Marshall and Weimann, they're used to playing in these games and they've set a really high standard.
"Dave Edwards, Conor Coady, Danny Batth, they're all used to it and they've played a lot of games.
"Mike Williamson and Richard Stearman have come in, they know the league, they're experienced, Nouha Dicko knows it, Doc (Matt Doherty) has done it, is robust and hardly missed a game, you get more of them to help because we need it.
"That's not to say you don't look foreign because you get robust foreign players who play 40+ games a year, play in front of big crowds and they know the demand of it. It might take them a few weeks to adapt but they can be robust, so you can't dismiss it.
"This Championship is a dogfight at times and you have to have that up-and-at-them battle. It ain't always going to be pretty but you know you can put people in the fray.
"We have to be on the same page. What happened last summer cannot happen again, it wouldn't be healthy.
"The mentality of the British game and to adapt to Britain..as a foreign player myself I had to adapt in Germany.
"You adapt to the country you play in. But we've also got to have a British core that know the league. I think that's important for this club."
It's expected that Wolves will bring in at least four key first team players this season.
No fewer than 34 players have been used in 2016/17 while Ethan Ebanks-Landell has been out on loan and will return this summer.
Lambert added: "Myself, Kevin (Thelwell) and Laurie (Dalrymple) are putting things in motion. I think it's important to have a core of British-type lads who know the league. It's the same in any country, Germany, Italy, to have a core of players from that country.
"We'll try our best to get lads in we think can go Saturday-Tuesday and churn out 46 games.
"It's not an easy league and 46 games is a massive chunk of your time. You have to be robust and ready.
"I know I've got the nucleus of a good side. Players that come in have to be right for this club.
"When you sign any player you're not sure if it'll work or not, but at least you have to know what you're going to get, or what you think you can get out of them.
"We've got a great stadium, really good training ground, really good people and a fanbase, so that gives you a chance."
