Five Wolves player of the season contenders
The winner of the Wolves player of the season award will be announced on Tuesday.
For many there's only one winner – Helder Costa. But despite an indifferent season for the team the £13million man hasn't been the only one to impress.
Wolves correspondent Tim Spiers picks out his top five Wolves performers in 2016/17.
CARL IKEME
A solid year for Ikeme after an indifferent 2015/16 when he had to jostle with Emi Martinez for the jersey. Undisputed number one for club and country now and the Blues defeat was the only time his standards dropped. Become a key senior figure in the squad and been impressively consistent. So rare that he makes a mistake and his communication has improved too. One of the best keepers in the Championship. When he's not in the team, you notice.
Appearances: 33
Highlight: Made four truly outstanding saves in a frantic 20-minute spell in the 2-0 FA Cup third round win at Stoke.
KORTNEY HAUSE
Not a full season but a consistent one when he's played, particularly after coming back into the team in February (despite his indiscipline indiscretion being around this time). Hause possesses all the attributes to make it to the very top and he's made a notable improvement this season. The silly errors are far fewer and aged 21 his best is yet to come. Edges in ahead of Danny Batth owing to that dip the skipper had around Christmas.
Appearances: 29
Highlight: Majestic and faultless at Anfield in the memorable 2-1 FA Cup win in January. Also impressed in the following round against Chelsea.
CONOR COADY
The jury was out after an inconsistent first season but Coady has won over plenty of critics this year. Impressed in midfield under Walter Zenga and has filled in admirably at right back under Paul Lambert. Needs to improve the attacking side of his game, but defensively he's been very sound. His passion for the club is undeniable (witness the uninhibited way he joyously celebrates every goal) and he's a big personality in a squad that lacks them.
Appearances: 44
Highlight: Played a starring role when he bossed the midfield in the 3-1 derby win Blues back in August. His goalline clearance against Forest – 20 seconds before Nouha Dicko scored the match-winner – was another highlight.
DAVID EDWARDS
Undoubtedly his best season in a Wolves shirt, certainly in terms of goalscoring with Edwards hitting double figures for the first time. Scored six goals in 10 matches at one point. Made a slow start owing to a Euro 2016 hangover but he soon got his batteries charged and showcased that limitless energy that is so beneficial to the more skilful players in the team, not to mention being the first Championship player to make 100 tackles this season. Has many critics, who look at what he can't do rather than what he can. But you'd have to go a long way to find more of a genuine team player.
Appearances: 48
Highlight: Just four days after a marathon shift at Anfield he scored twice at Barnsley in one of his and Wolves' best performances of the season.
HELDER COSTA
One of the most talented players to grace Molineux in years. The ball just sticks to his feet and his incessant lust for goals (12) and assists (8) has dug Wolves out of many holes this season. Goes missing in some games but overall where would Wolves be without him? For a while their tactic just seemed to be 'give it to Costa' and the Portuguese wing wizard would duly produce some magic. Looks unlikely to stay. If so, it's been brief but oh so memorable.
Appearances: 40
Highlight: So many to choose from but he really came to prominence in the 1-1 draw at Villa in October when he was almost unplayable. And that 80-yard run at Anfield when he took the ball from one box to the other before shooting narrowly wide was nearly the goal of life, let alone the season.
