Paul Lambert after last-day Wolves win: The work starts now
"The work starts now" was Paul Lambert's message as Wolves ended the season with victory over Preston.
Danny Batth's first minute goal – from the returning Jordan Graham's corner – was enough for Wolves to record just their eighth home win of the campaign.
They ended the season in 15th place with 58 points – the same total they accrued in 2015/16 when finishing 14th.
That's despite spending £27million on transfer fees alone. And Lambert is not underestimating the size of the task ahead this summer.
"The work starts now to make this club the best it can be," he said.
"There's a big job here, there's no two ways about it. We've got too many players, lads that no doubt will move on, we have to get a squad and a number where everyone's comfortable. It's about creating a team.
"In the last 10 or 11 games we're eighth in the form table. If we were doing the same ratios throughout the whole season we'd probably be in the play-offs.
"What's killed Wolverhampton this season is the start and the month of February. Everything else has been brilliant. If we can get the consistency level and the lads to help the current group then this could be an unbelievable club.
"You've got young guys who you know can play, you've got lads who've been at the club for ages who know it inside out, you need a wee bit of help with lads coming in. If we get that this club's got a great chance now."
There have been plenty of ups and downs under Lambert this season, with FA Cup wins at Stoke and Liverpool and league victories over Villa, Brentford and Fulham offset by a disastrous six-game losing streak in February and a lack of consistency that saw Wolves dragged into a relegation scrap.
Overall, though, he's enjoyed it: "I've absolutely loved it, I really have. It's a brilliant club. Maybe it's lost its way a little bit, but I've had more highs here than lows. February was the lowest, everything else has been great and the cup games were unbelievable.
"I like to think I've brought a closeness with the supporters and the players. I've had a ball here, it's been absolutely brilliant."
As for the game, Wolves controlled it for long spells and could have won by more goals.
Graham impressed in what was his first start since January 2016, while Bright Enobakhare and Silvio had good games in what were rare starts. The latter is out of contract and his future will be decided this week.
Lambert said: "I thought we were excellent from start to finish, I couldn't ask for any more. It could have been three or four, but the way we played was very good.
"I've waxed lyrical about Bright since I've been at the club. He's a young kid, huge talent and he's a player.
"Jordan gave a terrific performance coming back from a really bad injury, which was a major plus. He was fantastic and the whole team was really good.
"I think the (Preston) right back wouldn't want to see him too much! He's got a great delivery when he cuts in on that right foot.
Silvio's played the last two home games. I hadn't been here long when he broke his foot in training. He came back not that long ago and that was his chance to go and play.
"The two games, he's been great. I've not seen too much of Silvio but he's been brilliant. Those talks will take place this coming week.
"The club's in a really good place. If it goes right, it can do anything it wants.
"If you're outside the top six and above the relegation line, it's immaterial. Everybody at the start of the season, you leave your ego at the door and you start the season from scratch.
"There's not much in the division. Mid-table holds no interest for me. I know what success is like and I want the club to have success."
