Dave Edwards confident of Wolves improvements as he opens up on relationship with fans
New signings can help Wolves soar up the table next season, David Edwards believes, as he likened his relationship with the club's fans to Jody Craddock's.
Edwards, who next season will mark 10 years at Molineux, is confident that everything is in place to launch a promotion bid in 2017/18 – provided the right quality comes in.
The Welsh international also spoke of his delight at being nominated for the player of the season award along with Helder Costa and Conor Coady – with the winner being revealed tonight.
"I’m obviously delighted – it's a privilege and an honour," Edwards said. "Helder’s obviously been brilliant – if you go for our best player, he’s been our best player in terms of what he offers.
"Coads has been the standout Mr Consistent. He’s been asked to do a job at right back and has made the position his own. He definitely deserves to be in the top three.
"The club is definitely on an upward curve, I think.
"I think there’s a foundation there and that’s what we need more than anything.
"We have good owners, a good manager and great fans. Those are the things we need to start off with, but we definitely need additions in the summer.
"We need to bring a bit more quality to the team and trim the squad down as well. There’s no way we can have this many players going into next year because it’s unhealthy having so many at the training ground.
"Then it’s all about momentum, starting the season well and in the right way and getting this club really rolling forward – it would be a hard thing to stop.
"I know how determined the board are and how desperate the fans are for success.
"The manager is desperate for it as well. It’s key we get more players in the summer and then start the season well.
"I’m really looking forward to it and hopefully I can be part of it."
Edwards has been a near ever-present under Paul Lambert, missing only the first game of the Scot's tenure at Preston through suspension.
The 31-year-old believes he's played some of the best football of his career in 2016/17 and also chipped in with a career-best 10 goals.
"As the team’s been changing quite a lot it’s nice for me to have always been in it," he added.
"I do feel like I’ve played some of my better football this year. I know there’s still room for me to get better and be more consistent.
"I think I’ve been playing to my strengths a lot more this year. Hopefully I can get a chance to do it again next year."
Edwards is often the target for stick from supporters, particularly on social media where he recently had a self-imposed Twitter break.
But fans sang his name at Molineux on Saturday – and Edwards is enjoying some vocal support from the fanbase later in his Wolves career, as also happened with an ex-team mate.
"I liken it to Jody Craddock’s time here," Edwards said. "He sort of had the same and when he finished he was more liked at the end.
"I know I split opinion but even the ones who don’t think I’m good enough to be on the pitch or a Wolves player, I’m 100 per cent sure they still know I put everything into every time I’m on the pitch.
"That’s all I can ask. I know myself, in my own professional mind, that I do everything in my power every week in training, every game, to play the best of my ability.
"I know I’m not as talented as some of the boys but it’s not for lack of effort or trying.
"It’s nice when you hear songs sung...I’ve never had that up until this year and maybe last year a little bit.
"Of course that’s great. My little lad and girl were there on Sunday on the pitch to take it all in with me. They’ll be fond memories when I retire.
"Hopefully it’s always a club I can come back to and be fondly remembered for being proud to wear the shirt.
"Whether you like it or not there are players in the past who came here, stayed for a season and it’s too hard to handle the pressure and they want to get out.
"I like to think I’ve shown the character and the capacity to deal with that."
