Nuno: I will make players better at Wolves
Boss Nuno Espirito Santo will next week greet his new squad at Wolves with the message: “I can make you better players.”
The 43-year-old new head coach will meet the majority of his players for the first time on Monday when pre-season training begins at Compton Park.
Nuno, who has taken a short holiday since being unveiled as the club’s new head coach, is eager to assess his charges as preparations for the new Championship campaign kick up a gear.
Early inroads into the transfer market have already been made with the acquisitions of defensive trio Ryan Bennett, Roderick Miranda and Phil Ofosu-Ayeh and further incomings and outgoings are certain before the season gets under way on August 5.
But Nuno is also confident in his ability as a coach and remains convinced he and his new backroom team will be able to get more out of those players already at his disposal.
Speaking at his unveiling earlier this month, he said: “I really think we can progress the players in a short period of time.
“If you look at my career, in Valencia, we ended up with the best points total ever in the history of the club.
“Then last season at Porto, players who were not performing well before went on to have the best seasons of their careers.
“I am talking about players who played for more than 15 years and had the best numbers in their whole careers. I can develop these players.”
One player who does appear to be out of the long-term equation is winger Jed Wallace, with the winger on the brink of completing a long anticipated move to Millwall.
A fee has been agreed and the south London club had been hopeful of sealing the deal on Thursday after the 23-year-old, who spent the second half of last season on loan at The Den, agreed personal terms.
A late hitch delayed the move, though it is still expected to go through in the near future.Wallace is likely to be joined at Millwall by Wolves team-mate George Saville, with the Lions aiming to make the midfielder part of a double swoop.
