The 20-year-old Portuguese international midfielder has agreed terms on a £40,000-a-week contract.

The fee matches the £15m Villa paid for Jonathan Kodjia a year ago, therefore equalling the Championship transfer record.

Deep-lying playmaker Neves has been capped twice by his country and became the youngest ever player to captain a Champions League side when skippering Porto aged 17.

He was managed by Wolves boss Nuno Espirito Santo last season and it’s believed the head coach, as well as Jorge Mendes, brokered the deal.

It’s also expected that a season-long loan for Neves’ team mate Willy Boly was being announced today.

The 6ft 3in 26-year-old French centre-half will become the fifth defender to move to Molineux this summer. Both players will travel to Austria on Monday with the rest of the first team squad.

Any transfer announcements that would have been made on Thursday or Friday were postponed in the wake of the club revealing that goalkeeper Carl Ikeme had contracted acute leukaemia.

A number of fundraising ideas are being discussed by the club and will be announced in due course.
